What is graphic design?

Graphic design is the methodology of visual communication, and problem-solving through the use of type, space and image. The field is considered a subset of visual communication and communication design, but sometimes the term "graphic design" is used interchangeably with these due to overlapping skills involved. Graphic designers use various methods to create and combine words, symbols, and images to create a visual representation of ideas and messages. A graphic designer may use a combination of typography, visual arts and page layout techniques to produce a final result. Graphic design often refers to both the process (designing) by which the communication is created and the products (designs) which are generated.

Common uses of graphic design include identity (logos and branding), publications (magazines, newspapers and books), print advertisements, posters, billboards, website graphics and elements, signs and product packaging. For example, a product package might include a logo or other artwork, organized text and pure design elements such as images, shapes and color which unify the piece. Composition is one of the most important features of graphic design, especially when using pre-existing materials or diverse elements.

LOGO DESIGN

Logo design is all around us. To the general public, logos serve as an instant reminder of a company or a product, to the client they’re the point of recognition on which their branding hangs, and to us designers they represent the challenge of incorporating our clients’ ideologies into one single graphic.

CORPORATE IDENTITY

Communication design is a mixed discipline between design and information-development which is concerned with how media intermission such as printed, crafted, electronic media or presentations communicate with people. A communication design approach is not only concerned with developing the message aside from the aesthetics in media, but also with creating new media channels to ensure the message reaches the target audience.

MAGAZINE LAYOUT

Regardless of what project I am working on, I always manage to find inspiration from the design of magazines and books, even if it’s something as simple as a font or color combination. The sheer volume of work and talent that goes into crafting a solid layout design can provide a priceless amount of inspiration.

CORPORATE BROCHURE DESIGN

When thinking of how to design a brochure, keep the end purpose in mind. Is this a brochure that's going to be posted out in response to requests made on a website? Is it a giveaway at an exhibition, or a leave-behind brochure? When someone opens it, what will it say to them? Design for that person, not for yourself.
